Artificial intelligence algorithms are increasingly being used in critical decision-making processes such as hiring, loan approvals, and criminal justice. Proponents argue that algorithms eliminate human subjective judgement and apply consistent criteria, thereby enabling unbiased decision-making. Critics, however, contend that algorithms learn from and amplify the social biases embedded in historical data, systematically reproducing discrimination against certain racial, gender, and socioeconomic groups. There is also concern that the decision-making process of algorithms operates as an opaque 'black box', making it difficult for those affected to challenge the outcomes. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

How to Approach This Question

  3. 3

In the conclusion, compare the two views and restate which one you find more convincing and why.

  4. 4

Aim for 270–290 words in 40 minutes and use neutral discussion markers: on the one hand, by contrast.
